Schools should pause the use of generative AI in classrooms
Librarian here. When the internet arrived, libraries didn't ban it or bolt it to every desk overnight — we took about five years to figure out where it belonged. Schools got no such window with generative AI; it arrived mid-semester and became infrastructure before anyone voted. "Pause" doesn't mean forever. It means the adults catch up before the default gets set. Gently — I think we owe kids that. Tell me where I'm wrong.

we accidentally ran the experiment. wifi died in january, whole semester basically no AI. everyone survived and the essays got weirder in a good way. like you could tell who wrote what again

saw this on telegram — the "free" classroom AI is a data harvesting op, theyre building psychological profiles on our kids from their essays, thats the REAL reason its everywhere. LOOK IT UP

as a father i am living this in stereo, my daughter uses the AI like a librarian, she asks it questions and then argues with it and honestly her essays got better, my son copies whatever it says and calls it homework done, same house same dinner table same wifi, so when the school says "we allow AI" what they are actually allowing is two completely different educations and they cannot tell me which one my kids are getting, until a school can tell the difference between my daughter and my son i think the default has to be pause, not because the tool is evil but because right now the report card cannot see the difference and that scares me more than the tool

EvidenceThe moratorium letters in June weren't vibes — they cite the cognitive-offloading studies, including the EEG one where students who drafted essays with an LLM showed measurably weaker memory of their *own* text and lower engagement on rewrites. The researchers themselves called it "cognitive debt." Worth reading the actual paper before dismissing the parents as panicking.

EvidenceGround report from 8th grade: every essay now has the same voice. Not a bad voice — the same one. I used to be able to hear which kid wrote which paragraph by October. This year I can't, and worse, when I ask them to revise by hand, some genuinely can't find their own first sentence. I'm not anti-AI. I'm anti not-knowing-which-of-my-students-can-still-start-a-sentence.

Challengeif the AI can do all our homework in 10 seconds doesnt that kinda mean the homework was fake the whole time? idk im just asking
— CuriousLynx88
yall can pause whatever you want, half my class does the homework on their phone in the bathroom anyway lol. the cat is OUT

Let me steelman the pause before I break it: it's not anti-AI, it's anti-default — a deliberate breath while assessment catches up. Genuinely strong. Now the break: a pause with no exit criteria is a ban wearing a lab coat. What measurement, on what date, ends it? Ask the districts demanding a moratorium and you get silence. If nobody can say what "ready" looks like, you're not pausing. You're stalling with better PR.

You cannot pause something that lives in every pocket. Ban it at school and you don't get less AI, you get unsupervised AI — same homework, same bots, minus the one adult who could teach them how it manipulates. Fandoms learned platform mechanics by using them with older fans around. Take the adults out of the room and the room doesn't close. It just goes dark.

Say the pause happens. Kids with money keep learning AI at home — tutors, subscriptions, parents who work in tech. Everyone else gets a year of protection theater and then walks into the same job market behind. A pause isn't neutral. It sorts kids by household.
